2024 NASPGHAN/NASPGHAN Foundation URiM Medical Student Mentored Summer Research Program

Purpose: To develop a program at multiple sites throughout the U.S. and Canada through which a medical student can have 10-week research experience under the mentorship of basic or clinical scientists with a research focus in pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology, or nutrition.

Candidates: Students, who self-identify as Underrepresented in Medicine (URiM)*, in good standing at accredited medical schools in the U.S. and Canada who have completed at minimum their first year of medical training. Preference will be given to students who are seeking a research experience between the first and second years of medical school, though applications from all currently enrolled students will be considered.

*The following racial and ethnic groups have been shown to be underrepresented in biomedical research:
American Indian or Alaska Native. A person having origins in any of the original peoples of North and South America (including Central America), and who maintains tribal affiliation or community attachment.
Black or African American. A person having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa
Hispanic or Latino. A person of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race. The term, "Spanish origin," can be used in addition to "Hispanic or Latino."
Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander. A person having origins in any of the original peoples of Hawaii, Guam, Samoa, or other Pacific Islands.

Mentors: M.D., Ph.D., or M.D./Ph.D. members of NASPGHAN with a track record of independent peer-reviewed research, previous success with trainees (students, residents, or fellows), and a commitment to provide the necessary resources to make the experience meaningful for the student are eligible to serve as mentors. Mentors will provide documentation of productivity (CV), grant or other financial support sufficient to support the research activities of the summer student, and previous experience with trainees. Support

• Stipend for the research program: $4000.00. To be fully paid to student in installments with confirmation of initiation, mid-point progress and completion of the project. (Not for use for research expenses.)
• In addition, NASPGHAN will offer the awardee support to attend the NASPGHAN Annual Meeting in Hollywood, FL, November 4-7 which includes meeting registration, travel, hotel and meal stipend during the duration of the meeting.
• If a student is unable to find a suitable research mentor, NASPGHAN will help match interested students with a mentor in their local/ regional area.
