Program scope: The NASPGHAN Junior Scholars Program aims to support senior pediatric gastroenterology fellows or early career faculty interested in pursuing a career as a physician scientist. Through the program, participants will receive a virtual mentor to add to their local mentorship team, participate in career development sessions, and obtain individualized grant-writing guidance. By the culmination of the program, a career development award or equivalent (for example, NIH K08 or K23, Institutional K12/KL2, NASPGHAN Foundation Young Investigator Award or equivalent career development award) shall be submitted by each successful participant.

Eligibility:

  • 3rd or 4th year fellows in pediatric gastroenterology or a related advanced fellowship OR early career faculty (Instructor or Assistant Professor) within the first 2 years of their first faculty appointment
  • No previous receipt of an NIH or other government-funded career development award (e.g., NIH K08 or K23); career development foundation awards or internal career development awards are acceptable (e.g., KL2/K12)
  • Be a NASPGHAN member in good standing for at least the last 2 years

Program Components:

1. Each Junior Research Scholar will be assigned a career development mentor through the program. Every effort will be made to assign mentors in the given research domain and/or disease area based on the needs of the scholar. Mentors and Scholars will be advised to meet at least quarterly.

2. Career development session with all scholars quarterly (all sessions virtual except NASPGHAN):
